It's time for a pivot! Here's what I'm looking for in my next job opportunity.

This calls for a pivot!

It was an ordinary Monday morning on July 10, 2023, as I joined my third meeting of the day with my boss. Little did I know that this meeting would take an unexpected turn. I was informed about a workforce shortage that was affecting several positions, including mine. Shocked and disheartened but determined not to dwell on this setback, I quickly hung up the call and started looking for new opportunities. It was clear that I needed to pivot on the experiment with Solution Wolfe (see last post to catch up on what's happened with the experiment as of July 9th here) and reassess the market conditions to determine my next move. I will post one last entry of the experiment to summarize the results and explain the details of why the pivot was also necessary from a scientific method perspective soon.  Right now, my primary focus is to land employment and leverage Solution Wolfe to showcase my talents in the job(s) I am targeting. And that's where you come in – I'd really appreciate your help.

Job I'd LOVE to land!

I am driven to optimize the customer experience, not only after they purchase the products I manage but throughout their entire journey, from awareness to consideration to decision to buy all they way through engagement, monetization and retention. It's important to me to eliminate any friction that may arise along the way. I believe that the customer's overall experience is more than just their interaction with the end product; it encompasses every touchpoint and interaction as that customer goes through life.  By removing friction from the entire journey, this will produce a more customer centric approach and allow for flexibility for us to experiment with different product and product types and if appropriate, I'd love to experiment with product-led growth.  The jobs I am talking about cannot be done by one person alone and will take a team to accomplish this.

To do this, I need to ensure I have agency to influence and/or complete ownership of the system of discovery (the stuff left of the backlog), the system of collaboration (the stuff we do for shared understanding), and the system of feedback (the collection of humans that are the customer and represent the customer voices making their way back to new discovery).  I want to work in a system where the teams delivering the work are trusted, have all the skills and tools necessary to do the work and are humble enough to ask for clarity and help when needed.  If the organization has coaches to help the team, that's great!  If the team is mature enough where coaches are no longer necessary because business agility is encapsulated in the system of delivery, even better!  I can also lean in here if necessary and if I do, my aime will be to work myself out of this job.  A business agility coach is great to have but also first to be let go in a down economy so I don't want to solely rely on that either and I can also lean into a role like this where necessary in addition to my normal day to day responsibilities.   I am passionate about helping others achieve their fullest potential and where I've found most of my success as a consultant.  The role I seek is a managerial role that also get's my hands dirty in the work.  I aim to build a team and also lead by example.  I want to set folks up to hit their passions out of the park and have been doing so as a consultant for many years.

Career History

I have a strong passion for streamlining and improving work processes. This is why I have gravitated towards roles in product management and process optimization throughout my career. As I was growing up, my father worked as a NJ Turnpike Toll Booth Collector (exit 7A for my fellow New Jersey residents!). While the job provided state benefits, it did not pay much, so I had to start working at a young age if I wanted anything beyond the essentials. This experience taught me the value of a dollar and the varying degrees of difficulty in earning it. It also instilled in me a sense of resilience when faced with challenges and the ability to optimize my output with what I have.

Career Timeline (1)-1

I have had the privilege of working in a wide range of industries and taking on various roles throughout my career. This diverse experience has given me a deep understanding and empathy for different perspectives. However, my journey truly began when I was contemplating a career in medicine. Coming from a modest background, I wanted to be absolutely certain before committing to the costly and time-intensive path of becoming a doctor. So, after completing college, I decided to work in the medical field for a few years. This hands-on experience was invaluable, as it helped me realize that being a doctor was not the right fit for me. I have immense admiration for the dedication and compassion of doctors, but I knew deep down that it wasn't the life I desired. It was through this exploration that I discovered my true passion for problem solving through product management, and I am incredibly grateful that my career as a cytogenetic technologist led me to this fulfilling path.
